What would happen if the world becomes dark?

The three biggest problems are

1) The food chain

Photosynthesis is at the root of the food chain. The crops that we, and that livestock eat, all depend on sunlight to grow.

No sunlight, no crops. We’d need to switch to artificially-lit growing very quickly, and given the energy involved in this, you can say goodbye to 99% of the word’s population within a month.

2) Oxygen

No photosynthesis means no oxygen. How long it would take for us to suffocate if no new oxygen is being produced? Even if we somehow solved food, we’d still end up suffocating eventually.

3) Water

No sunlight means no evaporation and no water cycle. No water cycle means no rain. No rain means no freshwater other than from ice-melt.

Over large portions of the world, freshwater would run out very quickly as reservoirs run dry.

So if the world became dark, we’re going to die. The only question is how: thirst, hunger, or suffocation?
