If you do not eat for a day or more, your body will begin to experience various physiological changes as it adjusts to the lack of food intake. Here are some of the things that can happen:

  • Blood sugar levels drop: When you don’t eat, your body will start to use up its stored glucose for energy. Once these reserves are depleted, your blood sugar levels will drop, leading to symptoms like weakness, dizziness, and fatigue.
  • Metabolic rate slows down: When you don’t eat for an extended period, your body will slow down its metabolic rate to conserve energy. This means that your body will burn fewer calories, making it harder to lose weight.
  • Ketosis may occur: After a day or so of not eating, your body will start to break down stored fat for energy. This process produces ketones, which can be used as an alternative energy source for the brain and other organs. However, prolonged ketosis can lead to health problems like kidney damage and increased risk of heart disease.
  • Dehydration: Without food intake, the body may also lose fluids, leading to dehydration, which can cause headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.
  • Mood changes: Lack of food intake can also affect your mood, leading to irritability, anxiety, and depression.

It’s important to note that while skipping a meal or two is unlikely to cause any long-term harm to a healthy adult, prolonged fasting can be dangerous, especially for people with certain medical conditions. If you are considering fasting for an extended period, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional first.
